Abstrakt

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the problem of environmental pollution by active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). One way to minimize this phenomenon is to properly handle pharmaceutical waste. Pharmaceutical waste is most often associated with medicinal products. However, the possibility of taking certain actions also towards dietary supplements and waste generated from them should be explored, under the goal of a comprehensive fight against environmental pollution by APIs. The article discusses relation of APIs to dietary supplements and the possible classification of dietary supplements as pharmaceutical waste along with the resulting consequences. These considerations are based on the regulations of European Union secondary law concerning key products, i.e. Directive 2002/46/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 10 June 2002 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to food supplements (OJ L 2002.183.51) and Directive 2001/83/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 6 November 2001 on the Community code relating to medicinal products for human use (OJ L 2001.311.67), as well as waste law, i.e. Directive 2008/98/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 November 2008 on waste and repealing certain directives (OJ L 2008.312.3).
